Plastic icon
Plastic Icon depicts the first Barbie doll, one of the most recognisable icons of popular culture. Rendered in pastel pencil, it turns a mass-produced toy into a large-scale portrait, and asks the viewer to look past the familiar face at its cultural legacy. Introduced as a symbol of aspiration, fashion and modern femininity, Barbie has shaped generations of childhood while also prompting ongoing arguments about beauty, identity and representation. Isolated against a dark ground, the doll is lifted from toy to icon. Through hyperrealism, the work blurs object and portrait, and treats a familiar childhood figure as a contemporary cultural artefact.
