Vernon W Jones
Vernon W Jones is a Welsh painter of seascapes and maritime subjects. Painting the sea found him in 2003, first through J Class yachts in oil — a new subject and a new medium. After two years with the yachts he turned to the open sea. The oceans have been his subject since 2005, later including the shore.
He trained in portraiture and illustration (HND, West Wales, 1994). That discipline of reference still sits under the work. From 2013 he began to use acrylic alongside oil, bringing realism and a more expressive handling together. During the 2020 lockdown he widened the subject matter; in 2021 he worked intensively in alla prima oil, preparing for painting outdoors.
The sea, for him, is a force that deserves respect — storm cloud, wave, atmosphere and the feeling they leave. Detail, movement and drama are what the work is about. He divides his time between the UK and Macedonia, and exhibits in the UK and internationally.
