Ansgar Dressler

Spirits of Skies is Dressler's signature series and the work he is best known for. These paintings unleash a raw, untamed energy — explosive colour contrasts, movement that refuses to settle. The composition follows no strict order; it is built intuitively, a direct expression of inner impulse and emotion.

It is that unfiltered spontaneity that makes the series breathtaking. The colours seem to float in space, in constant flux, as if they were living on the canvas. The conscious control of chaos becomes an art form in itself, combining energy, wildness and artistic freedom. There is no narrative to decode — only the pure power of colour and movement.

The surfaces come from a technique Dressler developed himself: his own preparation of the paint, applied with a palette knife in many layers and sealed beneath a glossy varnish. It produces a spatial depth with no real equivalent in contemporary abstract painting — the colour appears to sit inside the picture rather than on it.

Born in 1970 in north-west Germany, he lives and works near Augsburg. His paintings are held in private collections worldwide, chiefly across Europe and North America.
